La Morera de Montsant
What existed before creation? According to the ancient Egyptians, a nebulous ocean that went by the name of “Nun”. The same word in Esperanto means “Now”. Both these concepts evoke the passing of time, the central idea in this (fourth) album by pianist and composer Carles Viarnès, a collection of intimate, evocative pieces to transport the listener to unknown dimensions.
Viarnès' creations sketch out hypnotic, cinematic landscapes, apparently static but in constant movement. An austere but emotional soundscape. Fragile and melancholic at once. Profound, timeless. Moving.
Straddling minimalism and contemporary music, following in the footsteps of composers like Górecki and Arvo Pärt, this Catalan musician sets out from a solid classical background but adds electronic and experimental touches. Always with the piano at centre stage, with influences like Nils Frahm, Max Richter and Hauschka.
Nun is a slow-burning album, the result of meticulous work from 2015 to the present. Composed, arranged and performed by Carles Viarnès himself, who breathes life into every instrument and every sound.
